Copyright 2009-2013. All Rights Reserved.
Existing Art: Until 2011, Dr, Pratt made little effort to market a fairly large inventory of original artworks, mostly created before 2002 for various publications. Those works are now available for purchase through this website. All are original works, not reproductions (see Prints and Reproductions below), and purchasers acquire only the artwork itself. (Copyright remains property of the artist.) Further history and information is given with the enlarged images of some pieces. Other important information is listed below.

Dimensions for framed or matted works are approximate outside measurements; sizes for vignettes are approximate mat opening sizes.

Framed pieces may be sold unframed with a price adjustment. Most framed works are under clear vinyl rather than glass for easier shipping.

Price includes shipping for small pieces (mostly those under $500). For larger items, a shipping and handling charge may apply, depending on method of shipping.

North Carolina residents must pay sales tax (6.75% as of December 2011).

All items are subject to prior sale, of course, so please email Dr. Pratt doug@hdouglaspratt.com and ask about availability before sending any payment.

Customers wishing to use a credit card, and international customers, can use a free and easy PayPal account. Please email for details.

Sponsorship of future paintings:  Dr. Pratt has plans for many new illustrations for the new edition of The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific. You can help with that project (details here), and receive the original art when completed, by sponsoring these paintings.  You can claim yours by sending a 25% deposit, with the balance due on completion. Sponsors will be acknowledged by name in the book

Private commissions: I will gladly create a unique work for you. You may choose the species involved, and suggest what surroundings you have in mind, but beyond that you must allow me full creative leeway. As you can see from the existing sales offers, my prices range from the low hundreds to the low thousands, from small vignette portraits (plain background), to full background close-ups, to birds in landscapes. Many people just prefer to tell me how much they are willing to pay, and then let me create something appropriate to the price. Commissions require a non-refundable 10% deposit to seal the contract. Balance is due upon notice of completion, with documentation, of the work. Delivery time depends on circumstances and is unpredictable. Because of prior commitments to publishers, commissions are not necessarily painted in the order they are received. Purchasers must contact Dr. Pratt directly by email or phone (number sent on request) to negotiate the parameters of the commissioned piece.

Prints and reproductions: For prints, note cards, and products other than original paintings and drawings, please click here. Jim Griggs is a long-time friend and promoter of my work, and a highly skilled producer of giclée prints.  His products have the look of original artwork, and are faithful to the originals in every way except for size. Jim also does single-order giclée prints of my larger paintings. Such prints are done “by hand”, one at a time, so are essentially original works of art themselves.  Prices reflect the amount of work involved.

This is a painting I did as a learning exercise. I like the idea of the strong shadow crossing the bird. The painting hung in my living room for years, but I eventually gave it to my mother. It reverted to me when she no longer had space for it. It was used as the logo for the American Birding Association’s convention in Louisiana in 2007.
I am offering these paintings, which I consider to be my best work to date, for the first time.  I have long thought that I would like them ultimately to be kept together as a set and displayed in some public museum or other venue.  I am offering the discounted full set price with that in mind. However, because several individuals have expressed interest in acquiring one or more of the plates, but not the full set, the set price will be available for only a limited time.  If you are interested in any of these paintings, but not the whole set, please let me know and I will give you right of first refusal if no one purchases the entire set.
My original intention was for the cover of this book to be a full background painting, but I was overruled by the editorial staff on the grounds that it would be the only full background painting in the book.  This was before the days of computer graphics, so I had to paint a white mask to cover some of the background to convert the painting to a vignette style.  My mother kept the original painting until recently, but no longer has space for it, so I am offering it for sale.
Anis and Old World Cuckoos ('87 edition)
Alaskan Warblers and Flycatchers
Yellowthroats, Chat, etc.
Spindalis, Bananaquit, & Sparrows
Pratt painted a total of 67 plates for the first and second editions of this popular field guide. Of the original series, only 3 were never sold or otherwise dispersed. All of them depict birds not well known to North American birders. Now they are being offered to an international audience.  Recently, the yellowthroat/chat plate has become available again because the owner no longer has space for it. The image of the Yellow-breasted Chat in a trumpet creeper was the book’s title page logo for nearly 20 years. These original paintings, which are familiar to millions of birders, only rarely come onto the market.
Margay in the Clouforest (watercolor and gouache)
$4500
This painting is from the collection of Will Carter of Weslaco, TX, who is moving to smaller quarters and no longer has room for it. He has asked me to sell it for him, and I am happy to assist. It is from a series of American cat paintings I did for the American Masters Corporation of Houston, no longer in business.
