Pratt painted a total of 67 plates for the first and second editions of this popular field guide. Of the original series, only three were never sold or otherwise dispersed. Recently, the yellowthroat/chat plate has become available again because the owner no longer has space for it. The image of the Yellow-breasted Chat in a trumpet creeper was the book’s title page logo for nearly 20 years. These original paintings, which are familiar to millions of birders, only rarely come onto the market.
